Blue's Clues

We moved into our new flat recently and there was a ton of furniture to build. Kindly my boyfriend's brother offered to come to London to help, along with the dog. The poor thing spent most of the day in the garden while the boys got to work, when he wasn't busy shredding cardboard. I couldn't find any evidence of the dog until I went outside and saw all the muddy paw prints on the doors - which naturally inspired some nail art!

We had a bit of a debate recently about how many toes a dog has, we settled on four in the end, so that's what I stuck to with my doggy paw prints!

I have been meaning to try paw prints for a while, after seeing them on One Nail To Rule Them All. I just used two dotting tools, a bit one for the pad and a small one for the toes. The white polish is Rimmel - White Hot Love* and the blue is Rimmel - Mind The Gap, Victoria. I also added a few dots of Models Own - Bora Bora between the paw prints to even out the white space a little.

The colours I chose really remind me of Blue's Clues, an old children's TV program, this was totally unintentional! Does Blue's Clues even still exist?!

Clowning Around

fish nail art
These nails remind me of my good friend Vicky. She used to be absolutely obsessed with clown fish while we were at school and used to drag us past a particular shop (Karen Millen on Sloane Street, I think) every day because it had a fish tank. Ah, good - and random - times!

I would call these Nemo nails but they don't really look like him *sad face*. I was definitely going for Nemo but let's just say they are a random, nameless clown fish. I used the beautifully bright Juice Bar Hopping* by OPI for the base of this mani and used my black and white Barry M nail art pens for the details.

Maybe not a look for every day but fin if you are going to the Aquarium or something. Or if you have a clown fish obsessed friend!

Rainbow Leopard Print

L-R: Mushroom, Berry Ice Cream, Strawberry Ice Cream, Peach Melba, Lemon Ice Cream, Mint Green, Sugar Apple*, Huckleberry*, Blueberry Ice Cream, Grey
For today's design I used a lot of Barry M polishes, eleven of them in total! I wanted to do a rainbow design so raided my Barry M stash, you can always rely on them for bright and fun colours. I tried to pick out mostly pastels for this mani.

I chose to create a leopard pattern in a rainbow colour scheme. To achieve this look I started with two coats of white polish and let it dry fully. I then lined the polishes up in colour order and assigned two per nail. With a small brush I drew the leopard print pattern on, covering half a nail per polish. I did have to mix the really pale colours Huckleberry* and Sugar Apple* with their neighbouring colours as they just didn't stand out against the white.

I'm not that happy with how this mani turned out as some of the colours are too similar, and some are very different to each other. Overall I think it's fun and the multicoloured leopard is nice, but I just had a bit of a disaster with my colour choices!

Have you tried any rainbow coloured designs? How did yours turn out?

Centre Stripes

What on Earth has happened to the weather?? I hope the Sun is still shining where you are but it has most definitely faded from London skies. However, Jo and I are still using up the last days of 'summer' to showcase our favourite neons. My favourites this season were, without doubt, the Maybelline Bleached Neons. I love them and I am sad that they will look a bit inappropriate in winter but I will definitely be wearing them well into the colder months as they make me happy!
I used the gorgeous Tropink as my base for this mani. It's such a pretty pink - very girly but not overwhelming. A hint of neon stops it from being too babyish. To create the stripes I used my black and white Barry M nail art pens.

I really like this mani in the flesh but unfortunately my pictures did not do it justice. The light this weekend was dreadful so I was unable to get a good image - sorry folks! Hopefully you get the idea of what I was trying to achieve.

Which summer polishes will you find it hard to stop wearing into autumn?

Beautiful Beach Bag

So I'm totally in love with Models Own Polish For Tans, whyyy did I not get these as soon as they came out?! I can't stop using them in my manis at the moment, so I hope you like them too!

Today's mani uses Beach Bag and Misty Grey, both from Models Own. I started off with a simple fade and liked it so much I had to photograph it. The worst thing about doing a nice fade is the potential to mess up the design on top, so we've got into the habit of taking some quick pics before adding any art work, just in case! I would happily have stopped my mani here, the two shades are gorgeous together, but I just couldn't resist something on top.

I went for a geometric design on top of the fade - does everyone else think neon and geometric were born to go together?! I chose a simple freehand triangles pattern. Using a Models Own nail art pen I drew random triangles, evenly spaced, onto each nail. Although pretty easy to create, this design did take forever and I had a very shaky hand afterwards! I love how the design came out so might try it again, maybe mixing up the colours, or filling some triangles in with a different colour.

I'm making the most of these neon pastels while we cling on to the last dregs of summer! They are so fun and bright, but the pastel element makes them really wearable too. I even wore Shades to work the other day!

Do you have any of the Polish For Tans collection?

When The Moon Hits Your Eye

Jo and I are both trying to be a bit healthier with our eating at the moment but I am finding it soooo difficult. It's pretty apparent from my recent nail designs that all I can think about is food. Why does bad food have to taste so good?!

Pizza is one of my all time favourite things to eat. I'd definitely have a cheese and tomato pizza as part of my Death Row last meal. Rather than ordering a Dominos this weekend I created a pizza slice mani to satisfy my craving. Kind of worked. Not.
To create this mani I used two coats of Models Own's Apple Pie as a base. I then drew on the pizza slices using a black nail art pen. I used a small nail art brush to fill the slices with colour: Sinful Colours Unicorn, Models Own Nude Beige, and 17 Grapefruit. I then went back over the black lines and topped everything off with a coat of Seche Vite (I used an old-ish bottle which dragged a little and shmushed my design).

Well, they didn't exactly curb my craving for pizza but they are quite cute so I don't mind! What's your Achilles Heel food?

Tressa Nail Inspo

Today's design was inspired by a really cute dress I saw on Fashion Union's Instagram page. The 'Tressa' dress is a 60's-esque white dress with black and pink checks and it's so lovely. I instantly thought of my nails when I saw the eye catching pattern and colour scheme.

I set to work with Barry M's White polish and Black and Pink nail art pens. I had to make sure I was very patient and let the white base dry, as usually I don't and just end up smudging everything. Once dry I drew the black checks on freehand with the nail pen. On top of this I added the pink checks. The pattern isn't the neatest, but I wasn't really going for the perfect look, especially as it was inspired by fabric.

Fashion Union have tons of awesome patterns and colour combos on their site - will definitely be using them again for nail inspo, thanks guys!

Inspired By: Lana Del Rey

I am a little bit obsessed with Lana Del Rey. I have been listening to Ultraviolence on repeat since it was released which is a bit sad really but I don't care! As well as loving her music I think the art direction in her videos is really beautiful. I love that vintage LA vibe she has going on.

Despite loving her work and being generally inspired by LDR I found it quite hard to think of suitable nail designs. A lot of the imagery I had in mind didn't work together so it took a couple of attempts to get this right. Here is one such nail fail - the sunset nail just did not work with the look at all.

The nails in my final was inspired by Lana's songs and videos: The blue roses from her Born to Die crown, the USA flag features in several of her pics and videos, the palm tree from West Coast, the denim from Blue Jeans, and the thumb just kind of fit.

Next time I really want to try making my own decals with some Lana pics. Maybe I'm a bit too obsessed!

Pink Paint Strips

I saw this on Instagram a little while ago, but I can't for the life of me remember who the artist was. If you saw this too please let us know so we can credit them!

The look popped back into my mind when I was looking for a simple and quick nail design. I've been looking at paint colours a lot recently as I my boyfriend and I are just about to buy our first home together, eek! I've always thought paint strips were really pretty as I love the different shades all together.

To create this design I started with a white base, it was a bit of a rookie error only using one coat, but I was in a rush! I then added a couple of pieces of striping tape to each nail. I added a different Barry M pink to each segment - Pink Flamingo at the base, then Strawberry Ice Cream and finally Rosehip* at the tip. The Rosehip* is very pale so doesn't stand out that well against the white line unfortunately.

For something so quick and simple to do I was really impressed with how these came out. What colour paint stripes would you choose?

Wakey Wakey Eggs And Bakey

bacon nail art
NYC Expert Last in Hudson Breeze* is the perfect blue base for this breakfast themed mani. For £2.49 it actually applied really smoothly. It gave an even, opaque coverage in two coats (you could probably have got away with one). If you wanted to omit the eggs and bacey the colour is amazing on its own too.

To create the eggs I drew a rough white splodge with a white nail art pen and used a dotting tool to blob a yellow yolk in the middle. My eggs cracked heaps as I impatiently drew them on before the based had dried - rookie error! To draw the bacon I used the nail pen again to draw the rough shape and then striped on red, orange, and yellow lines.

I'm not really sure what I was thinking with this mani! I think I saw a similar print on Pinterest and thought 'that looks cute' so just went for it. I don't even eat meat which makes the bacon nails even more crazy!

Back To Black

It feels like it's been forever since I've done a monochrome mani. Summer has been all about neons and coloured pastels, but now we seem to be heading back into autumn. Monochrome is perfect for the transition period as it works as both a summer and winter mani!

I was inspired to do a monochrome design as I noticed that Missguided are running an Instagram competition. I'm sure we won't win anything but I keep an eye out for competitions as they're a great source of nail inspo!

Although I only used two polishes for this design, Black Espresso and White from Barry M, it took me forever! The dots were pretty straightforward to apply, but the striped nails demanded more concentration. The ring finger is a design I've seen around a lot, and finally decided to try. I absolutely love it but it took an age, and a ton of striping tape! After that nail I was done with striping tape for the day and chose to draw on the design freehand. I'm a bit annoyed that my patience ran out as you can clearly tell the difference between the two, and the crispness of the ring finger makes the index finger look messy.

Overall, I'm pleased with how this mix and match mani turned out. Maybe it won't be so bad when summer ends and I have to say goodbye to my brights for a while...

Summer Tartan

Check Tee
I thought it was about time I tried a tartan print on my nails as it's one of the only major prints I haven't attempted. I found this cute t-shirt on the Topshop website which inspired my colour palette: a nice clashing bright blue and peachy orange. I used Rimmel's Too Cool To Tango for the base, Barry M's Papaya, and black&white nail are pens. I purposefully did wobbly black lines to try and make them appear a bit more boucle-like and less harsh. To create the look I painted my nails with two coats of the blue and topped with a coat of Seche as I am super impatient as you know! Once this had dried (ish) I drew  an off-centre, white, cross and allowed to dry a little bit before using a striping brush to add the peach lines. Then I used my black nail art pen to wobble two lines across. I topped it all off with another coat of Seche to smooth everything out.
My first attempt at tartan turned out OK. For winter I might try a more refined look as the lines on here don't really look like I tried to make them wobbly, they just look like I'm really unsteady!

Have you attempted tartan nails? How did you get on?

Geometric Polish For Tans

I have been waiting to get my hands on Models Own Polish For Tans range since before it even came out. However, I've been on a polish buying ban for ages and so couldn't buy any. I finally let myself lose in a Bottleshop and chose my favourite three from the range - Beach Bag, Shades and Bikini! I also purchased the summery Bora Bora, Misty Grey and Coconut.

I couldn't wait to try these polishes so I used five of them together in one mani! Coconut was the only polish left out of this design - but don't worry it will get plenty of use.

I used all three of the Polish For Tans colours, with two nails of Bora Bora. Onto the pastel neons I added a geometric design using Misty Grey. I was going to do a tribal design, but even I'm getting a bit bored of them at the moment - I know, I'm surprised by that too!

I used a striping brush to create the simple design. It was really straightforward to create but the effect is awesome, I'm really pleased with it! Using grey rather than the usual black or white softens the design a little and makes it a bit more wearable. I always love a good geometric mani!

L-R: Bora Bora, Misty Grey, Bikini, Shades, Beach Bag

Unfortunately I don't have much of a tan at the moment, so am not showing off the full effect of the neon pastel polishes. I did manage to convince my mum, who is rocking a great tan, to let me paint her nails with Beach Bum though and it looked incredible!! I can't wait to go on holiday and wear these bad boys, but which one to wear first...

Which is your favourite from the Polish For Tans range?

Pass The Popcorn

kawaii nail art

This look was inspired by a wacky swimsuit I found on a random website. When I saw it I pinned it to our fashion board (obvs) and decided that, although I wouldn't wear it to the the beach, I'd definitely wear the look on my nails.

I used a range of Barry Ms to create this mani: Blood Orange, Coconut*, Lemon Ice Cream, and Black and White Nail Art Pens. I drew the stripes on using my white nail art pen as I find it quicker than using a striper.

I think these are quite cute but I stick by my decision that the swimsuit is too much. What do you guys think?
