Barry M 2014 Summer Collection Review and Swatches

There's not much we love more at Dahlia Nails than a good Barry M release. The best kind are the Gelly kind as they have such a good formula: high-shine, easy to apply and long-lasting. Imagine our excitement then to see seven new releases in their Summer 2014 collection. At first we were a bit bemused at the choice of colours as it is a varied range but as soon as the colours were swatched we were sold!
First up are three fantastic brights. Kiwi* is one of my faves of the collection. It is a gorgeous, bright green with a hint of turquoise. This photo actually makes it look a tad more turquoise than it actually is. Damson* is a great blue for summer. It's not quite as pale as cornflower blue but not as dark or bright as a cobalt. I really love this shade, most of all because I learnt what a damson is (a plum if you're wondering). Pink Punch* is my least favourite of the bunch. No other reason than I have about a gazillion pink shades and even though it's pretty, it's not unlike anything I've seen before. If you're a bright pink fan, this could be the one for you.
These are the shades that threw me a bit. They are quite subdued for a summer collection, don't you think? Saying that, they are just my kind of colours - I love a bit of greige and most of these have a greyish tinge. Olive* is one of my faves as it is so unlike any other Barry M colour. This is a shade that will wear well into autumn/winter too - I do love a good transitional polish! Almond* instantly attracted me as a good work shade. It's a lilacy grey which always looks classy. Coconut* is my absolute favourite. I can't describe it all that well but it really reminds me of summer, holidays, warmth, and... coconuts! It is more than a white, it has a very faint hint of another colour which I can't quite place. Maybe peach?? I love it! Prepare to see much more of it on this blog. Elderberry* is another great blue. This time a paler, grey based tone. Again, a lovely shade to take you from summer to autumn.
Before receiving this collection we read a lot of comments on Barry M's Instagram about how the collection contains a lot of dupes for other Barry M shades. The most talked about was how much Almond* looks like Lychee. I thought this too when I saw Barry M's pic but when you see the two swatched together you see just how different they are. Almond* is actually a dead ringer for Vanilla from the Matte range. Kiwi* and Greenberry look similar in this pic but they are actually quite different too. Kiwi* is darker and more of a green green than a minty green. Blueberry and Elderberry* also look alike here but they are not - Elderberry* is much more subdued with the grey undertones.

It may look a bit of a mis-matched collection but we love this offering from Barry M. There's a nice mixture of bold and calm shades - perfect for the Great British weather! As per usual the formula is fantastic and all shades took two coats for full opacity. Thumbs up from DN headquarters!

Pink Punch and Almond are already available online and in Boots stores now priced at £3.99 each. Look out for release dates for the rest soon!

What shades will you be trying from this collection?

  2. Love Elderberry and Kiwi, but you're right, they do seem like an odd selection of colours for a summer collection! Gorgeous shades though xx

  3. Great swatches! I think Kiwi is my favourite! I agree it is a strange collection of nail polish colours for summer! The comparisons with the other Gelly polishes are really helpful too! :)

    1. Oooo a fan of the brights! We think they'd look great with a tan too. It might make the pink stand out a bit more, my pasty skin didn't really do it justice! Emma.x
